NORMAN — Those interested in learning about the Christian gospel of Jesus Christ through the eyes of his mother, Mary, have until Monday to join a pilgrimage to Israel and Turkey in November.
Catholic missionary Bruce Nieli and Norman author Maria Scaperlanda will lead the pilgrimage Nov. 4 through 16 to Nazareth, Jerusalem, Ein Karem and Bethlehem in Israel, as well as Ephesus in Turkey.
“It will be a traditional trip to the Holy Land, plus to Mary’s house in Ephesus, but with a specific focus on Mary’s reaction — how Mary approached the following of her son, Jesus Christ,” Nieli said.
He said the purpose of the pilgrimage is to develop discipleship in Jesus Christ by focusing on his greatest disciple — his mother, Mary.
“We’ll put ourselves in the place of Mary and follow Jesus as if we were Mary,” he said.
While visiting the places where Mary actually was, the group also will study what the Bible says about her.
“They will gain a greater love of Jesus and the desire to follow him through the example of his mother Mary,” Nieli said.
