NORMAN — The United Church of Norman-UCC’s speaker series, “The Progressive Sermon I Always Wanted to Preach …,” will feature its final speaker, the Rev. Phil Fenn, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the United Church of Norman-UCC, 1017 Elm Ave.
The six-part series has addressed evolving theological thinking that is taking place in progressive Christian churches.
The title of Fenn’s presentation, “Motivated Belief,” is a term he has borrowed from a contemporary physicist-theologian who has written extensively in the field of science and religion.
Fenn is minister emeritus of the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, having served as its senior minister for 22 years. While serving as a local pastor, he also served as a leader in a variety of church positions on a state and national level within Methodism.
One of his last contributions was that of being co-founder and theological theoretician of a progressive group within Oklahoma Methodism called “Mainstream United Methodists, The Oklahoma Liberal Evangelical Fellowship.”
The Rev. Fenn’s degrees are in philosophy and theology, but during his ministry, he focused on biblical criticism and interpretation because of the ongoing responsibilities of preaching.
