NORMAN — Super seniors

An Oklahoma City-based super-senior men’s US Tennis Association League tennis team (for players 60 and older) featuring members from Norman, Oklahoma City, Edmond, Enid and Tulsa, placed second at the National Championships, April 19-21, in Phoenix. The team beat out squads from Philadelphia, Albuquerque and Sacramento to win its group in preliminary-round play, then defeated an opponent from Naples, Fla., in the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Portland, Ore., in the final. The OKC team was captained by Steve Shaw of Edmond and Richard Perry of Enid, and included two Norman players, William Riggan and Marden Winkler. This was the only Oklahoma league team to advance to the national finals in any division this past year.

Rays moving on

The Rays, a 12U baseball team from Norman, won first place in the Edmond Double A Tournament in early April. The team went undefeated in five consecutive games over a two-day period, including some tough teams from Edmond and Tulsa. The team is now qualified for the state and national tournament later this summer.
