Promoting junior golf

NORMAN — To promote junior golf at all levels, the powers that be at Norman’s four golf courses — Westwood Park, The Trails, Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and Belmar Golf Club — have come together to form the Norman Junior Golf Association.

In addition to communicating, strategizing and, in general, finding ways to maximize rather than duplicate their efforts in the cause of junior golf at their courses and in Norman’s schools, it has also been decided that one thing had been missing from Norman’s junior golf calendar.

Hence, the first Norman Junior Golf Championship will take place Sept. 9. The plan is to have the tourney rotate among the four courses, but the original tourney will be hosted by Westwood Park.

The plan is for tee times to begin at 1 p.m.

Age groups will include 7-and-under, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17. Boys and girls 12-years old and up will play 18 holes. Those younger will play nine holes.

Entry fee for the nine-hole draws is $35. Entry fee for the 18-hole divisions is $40. The Westwood staff will be taking entries up to Sept. 5. Entries will be limited to the first 50 entrants.

If interested or needing further information, the Westwood Park pro shop can be reached at 292-9700.

Making her name in the World: The next Michelle Wie? Or Annika Sorenstam or Lorena Ochoa or Yani Tseng? Well, she might just be playing her golf in Norman.

Yujeong Son, 11, who was in grade school at Madison Elementary last spring, recently claimed the U.S. Kids World Championshp, played Aug. 2-4 at Southern Pines, N.C. after posting a 54-hole total of 5-under par 211, good for a one-stroke victory over Isabella Fierro Saul of Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico.

Son, who plays out of the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, carded rounds of 74-68-69.

Truly a world championship, the top 15 included players from the United States, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, China, Austria, Colombia and the Phillipines.
