Sooners take 2nd in regional

NORMAN — The Oklahoma women did not win the NCAA Central Regional that closed after three days and 54 holes Saturday at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Also, Emily Collins did not win medalist honors after leading following each of the first two rounds.

Still, the Sooners did all that was required and probably more. With second-place regional finishes, as a team and on the medalist board, they’ll still be one of the favorites when the NCAA tournament when it begins May 21 in Athens, Ga.

It was Duke, with an amazing final round of 12-under par that jumped in front of OU on the regional’s final day. The Blue Devils final round made for a 13-under par total of 851, six strokes in front of Oklahoma’s 857.

Also gaining direct entry into the NCAA tournament were Mississippi State (872), Florida (877), Arizona State (878), UC Davis (880), Wisconsin (883) and Michigan State (884).

OU coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell was fine with the proceedings.

“We played really well and I’m very proud of the girls,” she aid. “Were hitting the ball very well right now and we’re excited to go to Athens and see what happens. We just have to continue to take things round by round, shot by shot.”

Collins fired a final-round 74 to post a 54-hole total of 5-under par 211, five strokes back of Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald, who backed up a pair of 69s in her first two rounds with a Sunday 68. Joining Collins in second place behind McDonald was teammate Anne-Catherine Tanguay, who closed with her second straight 70.

Also for OU, Chirapat Jao-Javanil closed with a 71, Kaitlin Rohrback closed with a 74 and Taylor Schmidt closed with a 73.
