Norman North girls will host second straight regional

NORMAN — Regional assignments are out, and the Timberwolves will host for the second straight year.

The Norman North girls weren’t slated to host when preliminary pairings were released two weeks ago, but the T-Wolves’ play since then earned them the right to host the regional for the second straight season.

North (13-4) will meet Edmond North (4-14) at 8 p.m. Feb. 27. Also in the regional is Mustang and Lawton Eisenhower. The North boys (15-5) will travel to Mustang, where they’ll meet Westmoore (8-10) at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28, while Mustang will play host to Putnam City.

“It’s another step in trying to get back where we were last year and do better than that,” T-Wolves’ coach Jeff Blough said. “We’re excited about the chance.”

It’s the third regional in four years that North will host, something Blough credited to the consistency of the players and the program.

“It’s impressive what we’ve been able to do that three of the last four years,” he said. “These seniors were a part of hosting their freshman year, their junior year and now their senior years.”

Both Norman High teams will travel to Edmond Santa Fe. The girls (8-11) will play Southmoore (10-10) in the 6:30 p.m. game on Feb. 27, while the boys (3-14) will play the host team at 8 p.m. on Feb. 28. Edmond Santa Fe and US Grant will play in the other girls’ game, while Yukon and Lawton Eisenhower will also compete at the Edmond Santa Fe regional.

It’s a particularly tough draw for the NHS boys, who will face the state’s No. 2 team in Edmond Santa Fe (16-1).

“We know what we’re up against,” coach Matt Thornton said. “It’s going to be a challenge.”

Other area teams in Class 6A include the Westmoore girls, who will meet Yukon in the Choctaw regional. The Moore girls will travel to Midwest City to meet the host team. The Southmoore boys will play Lawton in the Midwest City regional, while the Moore boys will meet Edmond North in the Putnam City West regional.
