Deep freeze put on Norman sports

NORMAN — What was to be a reasonably busy day and night of Norman high school sports is no longer, today, as Norman Public Schools has closed its doors for a second straight day.

On the hardwood, Southmoore was to visit Norman North and Edmond Memorial was to visit Norman High, but those games will now be postponed or canceled outright as a result of bitter cold and snowy weather that continues to grip central Oklahoma.

Other area basketball matchups originally on today’s docket included Moore at Del City, Midwest City at Westmoore, Washington at Bridge Creek, Noble at Western Heights, Little Axe at Lindsay and Community Christian at Wynnewood.

However, Moore schools have also closed their doors today, as have Noble and Little Axe.

By mid-Thursday evening, the Transcript had not been able to determine if Washington and Community Christian would be in school today.

Another casualty of the weather today is the Class 5A and 6A regional swim meet, which was set to begin at 5 p.m. today at the new Edmond Schools Aquatic Center.

Instead, according to Norman North principal Bryan Young, the meet will now take place Friday and Saturday of next week.

Norman High, Norman North, Moore and Westmoore will be a part of that meet, trying to qualify swimmers for the state meet, which begins Feb. 21, also in Edmond.
