LAFAYETTE, La. — Coach Patty Gasso and anybody associated with the Sooner softball program she’s built will be hard pressed to remember a day as disappointing as Saturday.

Against the No. 23 Rajin’ Cajuns, the No. 19 Sooners played two games, spanning 14 innings. In that time they allowed 10 runs and 18 hits while picking up five hits of their own and the grand total of one run.

It added up to 7-0 and 3-1 defeats.

OU’s only hit in the opener belonged to third baseman Shelby Pendley, who broke up UL-L pitcher Christina Hamilton’s no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning.

Hamilton walked one batter, also Pendley, and struck out six, moving her mark to 7-1 on the season.

Meanwhile, three different Sooner pitchers — Kelsey Stevens, Leslie Miller and Taylor Dewberry — each allowed no less than three hits and no less than two earned runs, with neither Miller nor Dewberry, who came on in relief, pitching more than an inning.

That game ended OU’s season-high five-game winning streak.

In addition to breaking up the no-hitter, Pendley eventually came on in relief of Dewberry and threw the first two-innings of her collegiate softball career.

She walked three Rajin’ Cajuns, but allowed no hits and no runs.

Stevens and Hamilton returned to the circle for the second game and, though both went the distance, Hamilton remained the better hurler.

She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked only one, while Stevens gave up eight hits and walked three.

At the top of the order for UL-L (17-6-1), Natalie Fernandez and Haley Hayden combined to go 5 for 7 at the plate, draw a walk, score two runs and drive in three runs.

Nobody had more than a single hit for OU.

The Sooners (18-8) are back home to face Bradley at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
