NORMAN — Oklahoma wants to take a 13-1 record into Big 12 competition and the Sooners can do that by sweeping the Nike Invitational, which begins today at Howard McCasland Field House.
OU begins the festivities at 7 tonight, taking on Nebraska-Omaha. Saturday’s schedule includes matches at noon, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., with Miami meeting Nebraska-Omaha, followed by Tulsa taking on LIU-Brooklyn, followed by the Sooners meeting Miami.
Four matches dot Saturday’s schedule at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.. the slate begins with Miami meeting Tulsa, followed by Nebraska-Omaha taking on LIU-Brooklyn, followed by Tulsa and Nebraska-Omaha, followed by the Sooners closing out the event against LIU-Brooklyn.
The Sooners are not in the AVCA (coaches) top 25, but have received votes in every poll, and would be No. 28 if the poll were carried out to all teams receiving votes.
Texas, at No. 8, and Iowa State, at No. 25, are the only Big 12 programs in the poll, Kansas State also is receiving votes.
The Sooners, picked No. 5 in the Big 12 by conference coaches in the preseason, have been led by senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin, who has swept all three Big 12 offensive player of the week honors thus far in the regular season. The past week, she was also named national player of the week.
The Sooners open conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home against Texas Tech.
