Timberwolves win Duncan championship

NORMAN — It wasn’t pretty, but Norman North stepped up when it counted to preserve an ugly 35-31 win over Elgin in the championship game of the Duncan tournament on Saturday.

The T-Wolves were charged with eight fouls in the first four minutes of the game, setting them up for continued foul trouble that followed them throughout. But behind Alexa Scott, who was named tournament MVP, and all-tournament honoree Haley Woodard, the T-Wolves pulled out the victory.

“The defense really stepped up tonight,” coach Jeff Blough said. “They couldn’t score at all except from the free throw line.”

After three wins in as many days, the T-Wolves are feeling confident heading into Friday’s showdown with Edmond Memorial.

“We got see a variety of different styles this weekend,” Blough said. “We played against some good competition and that was good for us. It keeps our confidence going.”

Norman North 68, Dumas, Texas 46: Norman North clinched third place in Ardmore with a big victory on Saturday.

The T-Wolves took an early lead over Dumas and, despite playing a bit sloppy in the second half, held on for the win. The Timberwolves fell into the third-place game after dropping a 81-70 decision to Wichita Falls on Friday.

“We played pretty well today,” coach Butch Roberts said. “We turned it over too much, but we got off to an early and were up 16 by the half. We were sloppy with the ball when we got ahead, but we took care of business of the first half.”

North will next take the floor at 7:45 p.m. Friday at home against Edmond Memorial.

Norman High girls 62, Ardmore 40: Albany Anderson turned in her best game of the season on Saturday, and the senior led NHS to a victory over Ardmore.

Anderson finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 64-40 win in the tournament’s third-place game.

“Albany was a beast today,” coach Nichole Copeland said.

Anderson’s big game was especially needed after leading scorer Taylor Ely went down with a sprained ankle in the first quarter. Bethany Cox added 16 points in the win.
