Former Jones quarterback enrolls at Norman North

NORMAN — With senior quarterbacks Peyton Gavras and Channing Meyer graduating in five months, there was no doubt that someone else would be calling the signals for Norman North next season.

Who that someone would be though, has likely changed with the news Saturday that former Jones quarterback David Cornwell is transferring to Norman North.

On Saturday, a source close to the program confirmed the rumors that Cornwell had enrolled at North, just a month after leading Jones to the Class 3A state semifinals. In 14 games last season, the 6-5, 215-pound junior passed for 2,742 yards and 27 touchdowns while throwing just eight interceptions. He also added 755 rushing yards and another six scores.

Cornwell was dominant at the US Army Junior Combine last week and is tabbed as a four-star recruit by Rivals. He has offers from Indiana and Auburn but is expected to gather plenty more over the next year, with other schools including Oklahoma and Oklahoma State showing interest.

Cornwell will join the Timberwolves a year after their trip to the state championship. He will be part of an offense that lost most of its playmakers but will return plenty of talent under second-year coach Wade Standley.
