Cichero leads North to another district victory

NORMAN — The Norman North boys have dropped a trio of shootouts this season. Yet, after Tuesday’s 6-2 victory over Lawton, the Timberwolves (7-3, 3-0 District 6A-2) are in control of their district, in line for a pair of home-field playoff games, and have every reason to believe they’ll control their own destiny when it’s time to defend their Class 6A state title.

And, lately, junior midfielder Mauro Cichero has put himself in position to bolster those hopes.

With four goals against the Wolverines, Cichero has found the net eight times in his last four games. Though his abilities have always been clear, his impact on each game is catching up to all that talent and skill.

“He can be kind of nonchalant at times,” coach Geo Claros said. “Maybe he got upset at us tonight.”

In a good way.

Lawton shocked North, which was playing its fifth game in five days, by getting on the board only 2 minutes into the game and by tying the game 2-2 before the half.

However, having already tied the game 1-1 before North took its first lead on a first-half tally from Carson Cacciatori, Cichero came back with goals two, three and four after the half.

“He had some hits from behind the 18 that he hasn’t been able to get on frame before tonight,” Claros said. “So, hopefully, he found something tonight … The second half he got a lot on frame and was really dangerous.”

Cichero also had an assist, setting up Jacob Jerles, who made it 5-2 in the 50th minute. Jerles had an assist, too, setting up Cacciatori’s tally.

The T-Wolves get two days off before getting back on the field, visiting Westmoore on Friday night.

Norman North girls 10, Lawton 0: For the second time in as many nights, the North girls posted a mercy-rule victory, netting Tuesday night’s with five second-half goals.
