Claros, several Timberwolves and Tigers will be in Muskogee Saturday for All-State game

NORMAN — It’s a long way away but where else are you going to see Mauro Cichero and Theo Ostas playing alongside one another?

For that matter, Geo Claros might be worth the drive and admission alone, just to see how relaxed he can really be at any game he’s coaching.

Oh, and it’s for a good cause. It is, after all, the last high school soccer game several Norman athletes will play.

The Oklahoma All-State soccer game for Class 5A-6A is happening Saturday night at Muskogee’s Indian Bowl, and the boys game will include a very distinct Norman feel.

Claros, the Norman North coach who just guided the Timberwolves to the Class 6A state championship, is coaching a West squad that includes four hometown talents.

From his own bunch of T-Wolves, he’s got Cichero, generally believed to the be the state’s best player, and Cole Johnson. From Gordon Drummond’s Norman High team, he’s got Theo Ostas, who was a goal scoring machine this spring with 18, and midfielder Matt Hockett.

Other Transcript area players under Claros’ direction will be Austin Dodd and Chandler Dawson from Westmoore, Julius James from Moore and Jesse Archila from Southmoore.

On the girls West squad, North will be represented by Bri Kuestersteffen, Kali Newman and Lexi Carroll. Also, from Westmoore, Elizabeth DiSalvatore and Elle Stover are on the team, along with Moore’s Jordan Cleveland and Katelyn Williams and Southmoore’s Hannah Robinson.

The girls kick off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8.

Geo enjoying it

Claros wasn’t so sure about drawing the coaching assignment. With club soccer in full swing, he remains plenty busy with the game. However, that was before he got the team together.

“I didn’t want to do it in the beginning, but now I’m excited about it,” he said. “It’s been laid back and fun, but I told the kids the first day, I’m not going to treat them like it’s my high school team and we’re in the middle of the season, but I know it’s going to be competitive because that’s the kind of kids they are.”
