Sooner Allgood runner-up at national meet

EUGENE, Ore. —  Before she arrived at Oklahoma, Avione Allgood was already the U.S. high school national record-holder in the javelin, throwing the spear more than 171 feet during her days at Legacy High School in Las Vegas.

Wednesday, she finished one competitor shy of becoming a collegiate national champion. With a throw of 182 feet, 4 inches, Allgood, still just a sophomore, beat everybody at the NCAA national meet field, save Florida’s Fawn Miller.

Miller’s throw of 190-8 was good for gold. Victoria Paterra, from Miami (Ohio), claimed bronze with a throw of 182-3.

It’s been a successful couple of years since Allgood entered the Sooner program. She won the Big 12 outdoor javelin crown in 2013, before finishing second in NCAA regional competition and seventh at the national meet.

This year she finished second at the Big 12 meet, yet she did it with a personal best throw of 189-1. Two weeks ago she placed third at the West Regional meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

Allgood was one of three Sooners competing in the javelin. Elizabeth Herrs placed 10th with a throw of 166-0. Ashley Kowalewski placed 22nd with a throw of 146-3.

Still to compete for OU at the national meet are steeplechasers Brandon Doughty and Alex Deir, who will run for the first time today, hoping to reach Saturday’s final.

Saturday is also the day of the men’s javelin. Sooner sophomore Garrett Snow will be on hand for that after a throw of 227-4 earned him second place two weeks ago in Fayetteville.
