T-Wolves’ Young in Nike Elite 100 camp

NORMAN — Last year Trae Young enjoyed one of the best freshman seasons seen at Norman North. The sharpshooting son of former Texas Tech player Rayford Young started every game of his first season as a Timberwolf and impressed a number of college coaches, including those at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, along the way.

Now Young will get an opportunity to display his talents in the Nike Elite 100 camp this weekend, playing alongside several dozen of his peers from across the country in the annual game.

Young was a key part of North’s success in coach Bryan Merritt’s first year at the helm. The Timberwolves finished the season 19-8.

2014 football schedules released: Next season will be Norman High and Norman North’s first in the new two-district split that OSSAA officials decided on by dividing Class 6A into two divisions based on size.

Schedules for the season have been released, and both teams will play their first scrimmage on Aug. 22, with the first game of the year being the Crosstown Clash that will kick off the season Sept. 4.

One quirk of the schedule is that both squads will play one of their most marquee games on the same night. On Oct. 3, North will travel to Tulsa Union while Norman High will host Jenks. Jenks or Union have won the Class 6A state title each of the last 22 years.

All-State soccer on tap: Saturday’s All-State soccer game will look a lot like a game played in Norman.

Four players from Norman High and Norman North — North’s Mauro Cichero and Cole Johnson and Norman High’s Theo Ostas and Matt Hockett — will compete in the game that will be played Saturday night at the Indian Bowl in Muskogee.

North coach Geo Claros will lead the West squad after watching his team take the state title last month. Joining the Norman players on the team will be Westmoore’s Austin Dodd and Chandler Dawson, as well as Moore’s Julius James and Southmoore’s Jesse Archila.
