Trio tops first round of Mid-Amateur

OKLAHOMA CITY —  The Oklahoma Golf Association’s Mid-Amateur Championship, for amateur golfers at least 25 years of age, began Monday at Gaillardia Golf and Country Club.

Though Norman is being represented, no locals appear to be in the hunt at the 36-hole stroke play event that concludes today.

A trio of 1-over par 73s belonging to Jeff Coffman, Brian Birchell and Matt Rison have created a bottleneck atop the leaderboard. In fourth place all alone is Jon Valuck, two strokes back after a 75. Five more players — Jeffrey Topp, Tom Nielsen, Daniel Funk, Heath Myers and Max Showalter — are all three strokes back after shooting 76 on a very windy day in northwest Oklahoma City.

Coffman and Birchell are both Oklahoma Citians. Rison and Valuck are both from Edmond.

As for the Normanites, Pat Proctor and Blake Garland both settled for an 84 and Jason Faires struggled to an 87.

Mike Vaughn, from Purcell, finished with an 85. Larry Johnston, from Washington, came in with an 85.

Today’s final round begins at 8 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 10:20.

Artman close: Simultaneous to the Mid-Amateur, the OGA is also throwing a professional event at Gaillardia.

In that event, Rhein Gibson, after firing a 1-under par 71, leads Dillon Rust and Cameron Myers by a stroke after Monday’s opening round.

Among three players two strokes back with 18 holes to play is former Norman North standout Taylor Artman.

Rust, who is coming off consecutive Adams Pro Tour event victories, the last one two weekends ago at Belmar, might be the favorite heading into today.

Final round tee times for the OGA Pro Series event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today.
