More golf, fun or failure, never a bad thing

NORMAN — Eighteen holes down at the Westwood Invitational.

Only 36 holes remain and who knows if that’s a good thing or a bad thing?

Actually, of course it’s a good thing. It’s three days of golf that more people look forward to than any other tournament in the state. So, if two-thirds of it has yet to be played, the party’s just getting started.

On the other hand, if you lost your swing on the back nine and you’re not sure where it went and already you know you might not be the worst putter on earth but you’re clearly in the top 10, well, is it really a good thing?

That’s the question for the sports editor of this newspaper. Also, right there with it is my trying to make sense of the 76 I posted in Friday’s first round.

I was 2-under par after six holes, thinking, like an idiot it turned out, I might have to be re-flighted.

When I pull-hooked a misclubbed 6-iron out of bounds on No. 9, part of me was relieved. After that, nobody’d accuse me of sandbagging.

The problem was my swing deserted me on the back nine and by the time I was done, it looked like I might belong in a different flight heading the other way.

I want to be furious, harking on all the putts I missed, and the truth is I probably missed three I should have made. Still, three is not six or seven. The problem really was the swing, and that’s a very scary thing. Because if you can’t swing, you can’t play.

For Bobby Florer, Westwood assistant pro, who recently canned his ninth hole in one, it’s pretty simple.

“If I shoot above 71 or 72, I’m embarrassed,” he said.
