Dawson’s giving us an underdog story

EDMOND —  Say you’re a Sooner and don’t like Cowboys. Or an American Ryder Cup fan and don’t like Colin Montgomerie. Or fail to fall for the barrel of monkeys that’s Vijay Singh. Or, just maybe, you love a story that comes from nowhere.

Say hello to Marco Dawson.

Marco who?

He can’t be an American, can he? Otherwise, we’d have heard of him.

Though born in Freising, Germany, Dawson’s indeed an American.

So he must be one of these guys who came to life at 50, without much of a PGA Tour history.

Twelve different years, between 1992 and 2012, Dawson gained entry to at least 21 tour events.

So he must not have done much when he was on the tour?

Only in 2005 did Dawson make more than two-thirds of his cuts on tour and still he finished 139th on the money list.

Also, after Thursday’s opening round of the U.S. Senior Open, he’s sitting on a 66, one stroke back of leader Colin Montgomerie.

Anybody who ever reached exempt status on the PGA Tour is, by definition, a fantastic golfer. And still, Dawson’s played in as many Masters and Open Championships as you or I, teed up in just two U.S. Opens, in 1997 and 2003, and a single PGA Championship, just 18 years ago, in 1996.

Should he prevail Sunday, it will mark his first victory on a tour that matters either ever or since the 2002 LaSalle Bank Open, depending upon whether or not the Tour is a tour that matters.

Then there’s how he’s not supposed to be here. The 70 he shot at sectional qualifying at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla., was only good for an alternate position. But, somebody dropped out so here he is.
