Norman North’s Kaitlyn Milligan wins Class 6A regional

NORMAN — Kaitlyn Milligan turned the corner playing one of her best rounds of the season, at exactly the right time. The Norman North freshman was off to a great start at the Class 6A regional golf tournament despite the difficult conditions.

Then the nerves set in.

“A coach from Oklahoma State started watching me, and I started trying too hard on 10, 11 and 12,” Milligan said. “When I calmed down and started playing my game again I did better.”

In fact, much better. Good enough that the freshman won the tournament, carding a 69 to defeat Bishop McGuiness’ Alexis Sadgeghy by a stroke and all other golfers by at least eight. It was an impressive performance in windy and chilly conditions at Edmond’s KickingBird Golf Club.

“It feels amazing,” said Milligan, who was one of two golfers from Norman to qualify for the state tournament. “Throughout the year I’ve won a few, but there were a lot of really good players here. I’m very excited for state.”

Milligan is the youngest on a young T-Wolves squad, and coach Davee Deaton said the way she handled herself as a freshman on a new stage was especially impressive.

“She overcame the physical challenge, but also the mental one as well,” Deaton said. “If she plays like this she’ll do very well at state. She’s been getting better and better all year, though I don’t know how much better you can do than a 69.”

Milligan’s performance led North, which finished eighth at the event with a 370. Southmoore was the only area team to qualify for state, thanks to its sixth-place finish. Bishop McGuinness won the tournament with a team score of 343, while Edmond Santa Fe was second at one shot back. Westmoore finished 10th with a team score of 380 and Moore was 13th with a 421.
