Redwine, Mace make championship run a Crosstown Clash

YUKON — While the Crosstown Clash gets big billing in almost every sport, the head-to-head element of it doesn’t come up as clearly in track and field.

But in Friday’s 3200-meter final at the Class 6A Girls State Championship, Norman’s two high schools had nearly half the field as each brought a trio of runners looking to contend. In the end, it came down to a Clash, albeit something of a friendly one, with Norman High’s Hayley Redwine less than two seconds faster than North’s Abbey Mace in a 1-2 finish.

“Since we’re going to be teammates next year, it was great to finish like that,” Redwine said of her future University of Oklahoma teammate.

Sand Springs freshman Cheyenne Walden nearly crashed the party, setting a blistering early pace and getting out to a big lead. But Redwine held to her game plan, slowly chipping away at the deficit.

“I could tell about the fifth lap she was within striking distance,” Redwine said. “I was pretty much able to stick to what I wanted to do.”

Redwine made the pass in turn four of the next to last lap, then held off Mace in the final 40 yards after the North senior made a big final push.

“I could hear the crowd yelling her name, so I knew she was getting close,” Redwine said.

Pace’s teammates Isabella Rose and Rachel Chrisman finished 5th and 11th, while Redwine’s NHS teammates Camille Hemry and Grace Pantalone were 7th and 10th, respectively.

Redwine is trying to pull off quite a triple effort, as she will go for state gold in both the 800 and 1600 on Saturday. And she could face a second Crosstown Clash of sorts in those events from North’s Belle Wallace, a regional champion in each event last weekend.
