Southmoore's Brickman moving down the road

Moore superintendent looking to make changes

NORMAN — After two years with the Southmoore SaberCats, coach Jeff Brickman is moving on. The SaberCats head football coach announced Wednesday that he’s resigning from his position to follow that now familiar path from Southmoore to Oklahoma Baptist University.

“He basically told the team he really cared about them,” said former SaberCats receiver Jalen Adams. “That he was fortunate to be the head coach at Southmoore High School. And that today, the last day of team camp, would be his last day being there at Southmoore High School, and that he will forever and always be a SaberCat.”

Brickman’s announcement caught the team off guard. Adams, who graduated this year, happened to be at the facility when the team was told and said they had no idea it was coming when he called the team into the locker room at 1 p.m. It was just an hour after the team had finished its third day of team camp at Mustang.

“It was quiet,” Adams said. “Everybody was in a shocked mode. They really didn’t know it was coming. It was one of things where he said hey, guys, we’re going to have a meeting. He kind of brought up the announcement he was getting ready to leave and go somewhere that had offered him a job, I guess. You could hear a pin drop in there it was so quiet. After that everyone stood and gave him a round of applause.”

Calls to Brickman Wednesday evening went unanswered. However, he did talk to the Transcript earlier in the day at the Mustang team camp. At the time he made it seem like he was focused solely on being with Southmoore next year.

“Defense will be one of the better defenses we’ve had since we return 10 starters from last year,” Brickman said. “We changed the offense for three reasons. No. 1: We are in a tougher district. We are going to have to have more guys play on both sides of the ball, and if you are going to do that, I feel like you need to limit the amount of plays you run in a game.”
