Coach happy with Dean’s progress in switch from receiver to quarterback

NORMAN — Norman High’s Jakcob Dean knew making the transition from wide receiver to quarterback wouldn’t be easy. The increased preparation and ability to read the defensive coverage are things that can take players years to master.

So how’s Dean handling the transition after one intrasquad scrimmage?

He couldn’t be doing much better, at least according to his coaching staff.

Dean received praise for his first performance of the preseason, where he was able to make several big plays and keep the offense moving against a solid Tiger defense.

“He had a really good outing today,” coach Greg Nation said after the scrimmage. “It was a really nice job for the first scrimmage.”

Dean isn’t the only one who excelled on Saturday. Nation also noted that Stefan McCarthy and Logan Hill made noticeable gains in the scrimmage, while George Carter asserted himself in a young secondary.

“He looked really good at free safety today,” Nation said. “We saw some really good things today, and we’re starting to have some of those questions answered. We had some kids step up today.”

With scrimmages fast approaching — Norman North travels to Edmond Santa Fe on Thursday while NHS will travel to Bixby on Friday — Nation said that the focus will begin to shift from installing schemes and into executing those schemes.

CCS to utilize two-QB system: For the first time in several years, CCS coach Paul Potter is looking for a new quarterback. And he has options, with JJ Cortez and Haen Macintosh both vying for the spot.

“It’s a tough call, and they’ll probably both see time there,” Potter said. “They both run very well and can make different throws. We’ll use it to keep teams guessing when they’re preparing for us.”

Royals aim for tough schedule: CCS is still a year away from joining the OSSAA, but that doesn’t mean the Royals aren’t already competing with their future competition.
