Coach happy with Dean’s progress in switch from receiver to quarterback

Due to OSSAA regulations, the Royals are unable to compete in a postseason this season, but they’re already preparing for the inclusion into Class A next season. That means dates this year with Class A powers Wynnewood and Elmore City, as well as even larger schools like Casady and Lexington.

“We’re really going to find out where we’re at quickly,” Potter said. “We had a tough time finding teams to schedule us, but we’ve put together a good one for our guys.”

Tigers emphasize special teams: NHS and North have long had stellar special teams units. Last season, the T-Wolves had dangerous returner Jordan Evans, now at OU, as well as a stifling punting game. The Tigers have one of the state’s best kickers in Matt Hockett, a threat to convert any field goal attempt.

That’s an advantage Nation doesn’t want to give up this season, and it’s something the Tigers plan to work on more in the next two weeks before kicking off the season.

“We’ve always focused on special teams, and we pride ourselves on that,” he said. “A lot of teams don’t work on it as much as they probably should, and that can come back to hurt them. We don’t want that to be us.”
