State tourney awaits Tigers, Timberwolves

NORMAN — It is the last couple of weeks of the high school sports year. Already this week we’ve seen soccer playoffs begin, regional baseball get started, boys regional golf and, Thursday, the girls state golf tournament concluded.

Also, Monday was regional girls tennis and today begins the girls state tournament, which will include players from both Norman High and Norman North.

For the Tigers, Maggie Marcum will be playing in her third straight Class 6A state tournament and her second at No. 1 singles, while Gabby Schreiner will be playing in her second straight state tournament at No. 2 singles.

Marcum and Schreiner both qualified Monday at Will Rogers Tennis Center with fourth-place regional finishes. Today they’ll return to the same venue hoping to extend their season to Saturday.

The NHS contingent isn’t as big as last year’s when the doubles team of Grace Anthony and Elizabeth Waters also advanced, but it is the third straight year the Tigers have scored at least two entrants into the state tournament and, two years ago, when the Tigers sent two — Marcum and Kathryn Phillips — nobody could remember the last time it had happened.

North has one entry, the No. 1 doubles team of Caitlin Fields and Carol Fodra, who are both playing in their first state tournament.

It’s clearly Fodra’s last. She is a senior and is also an exchange student from Brazil. Fields is a junior.

“They actually started playing together well after half of our season was over,” North coach Jamie Wilson said. “They just clicked with each other.”

Diamond forecast: Norman North — and everybody else — moved up the Class 6A baseball regional it was hosting in anticipation of Thursday’s cold, wet and windy weather. Having nailed the weather, the Timberwolves are back in action today, looking forward to not having to come back to Tull Lake Park on Saturday.
