NORMAN — Between them, the Tigers and Timberwolves will be sending a full contingent to this weekend’s Class 6A boys state tennis tournament at Will Rogers Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.

Too bad it doesn’t work that way.

Norman High was at Shadow Mountain Tennis Club in Tulsa on Monday for Class 6A regional competition, while Norman North was in Oklahoma City on the same courts the state tournament will be played upon beginning Friday. And while the Tigers qualified their two singles entrants, the T-Wolves qualified both their doubles teams.

The biggest performance belonged to North’s No. 1 doubles team of Josh Marrs and Matt Carter who had match point to win their regional bracket over the Edmond Memorial team of Gillespie and Wolfe. Instead, a put-away overhead went awry and the tandem settled for second place by a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 count.

The final was a tough one to lose, but the match still bodes well for North heading to state.

“They were so close to winning,” North coach Phil Corbett said. “They should have their confidence so that they can go to state and take care of business.”

For NHS, the big performance belonged to Jarrett Ferguson, who breezed through his first two matches in straight sets before falling in the regional final to Muskogee’s Connor Finnerty, 6-1, 6-4.

“He’s playing with a lot more confidence than he ever has,” NHS coach Kelly Stout said. “He’s really hitting the ball well.”

Also qualifying, North’s No. 2 doubles team of Seth Fitter and Stephen Lashley placed third, closing with a three-set victory over Choctaw’s team of Anderson and Dudley.

Meanwhile, at No. 2 singles, NHS’ Jeff McKnight earned his way into the state draw by topping Moore’s Albert Guinera 6-1, 6-3, a player he had split two matches with earlier this season.
