Personal records fall at Mid-State Conference meet

NORMAN — Haley Woodard blew past everyone in the 400 at Thursday’s Mid-State Conference track meet at Norman High. Next up might be the state record.

Woodard ran a 55.4 in the event on Thursday, coming just short of the state record time of 54.89. She led a host of Norman athletes who won or finished highly at the last meet before regionals.

“I felt pretty good out there,” said Woodard, who also helped the T-Wolves’ 400 relay team to a victory. “When I’m running out there, I can’t see behind me and all I can hear is people yelling, so you have to self-motivate to push yourself.”

And, while coach Mike Ramsey said he wants Woodard to not push herself before the state tournament, the sophomore is eyeing the state record a week from now.

“Next week we could be liable to get the record,” she said. “Right now I’m trying to work on my form to get better.”

While Woodard led the way in the sprints to North’s third-place finish, it was distance runner Hayley Redwine who headlined for the Tigers. The junior easily won the 3200- and 1600-meter races while also taking second in two other events to help propel NHS to second place.

“I’m happy with how I ran,” Redwine said. “And we did a good job on our relay, we knocked 10 seconds off our best time.”

While Redwine is a serious contender for a title at the state meet two weeks from now, she’s focusing on not getting too far ahead of herself.

“Right now I’m just trying to qualify,” she said. “I’m focusing on that and improving as much as I can before then.”

Her coaches were less modest.

“Hayley ran great today,” Scott Monnard said. “And all four girls on our 3200 relay had (personal records) today.”
