Timberwolves’ Cichero named Gatorade Player of the Year

NORMAN — Gatorade, in conjunction with USA Today, annually chooses a statewide prep soccer player of the year in several states, including Oklahoma.

For the seventh time, the athletic drink company has chosen a player from Norman North, naming Mauro Cichero its 2012-2013 Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Player of the Year. It was announced Tuesday.

Cichero played a big role in leading the Timberwolves to their second straight Class 6A state championship game, scoring 22 goals during the season, the vast majority coming once district play began.

North went 7-0 in District 6A-2. The T-Wolves finished the season with a 13-4 record, falling 2-1 to Edmond North in the Class 6A final.

In the release announcing the honor, in addition to his exploits on the pitch, Cichero, a junior, was praised for maintaining a 3.25 grade-point average, for being a mentor to students learning English as a second language and volunteering on behalf of Students Performing Unselfish Deeds, or SPUDs.

Past winners of the award from Norman North include Will Smith (2011), Jack Coleman (2009), Chris Hyde (2001, 2002) and Patrick Tanner (1999, 2000).
