Former Sooners enter state hall of fame

NORMAN — A couple of yesteryear Sooners will be part of the 2013 Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame induction class, set to be enshrined Aug. 5 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Wayne Baughman wrestled for coach Port Robertson at OU from 1959-63, where he won one individual national championship and two team championships before going on to be a member of three U.S. Olympic wrestling teams.

Jimmy Harris was 25-0 as a starting quarterback under Sooner coach Bud Wilkinson, helping lead OU to the 1955 and 1956 national championships.

Baughman also coached two Olympic and five world championships teams. Before he retired from competitive grappling, he collected a gold medal at the Pan-American Games.

Upon leaving OU, Harris had a four-year NFL career as a defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys.

Harris died in 2011 at the age of 76 after a battle with lung cancer.

Also being inducted are Oklahoma City Thunder owner and chairman Clay Bennett, Norman resident and former Olympic gold medal gymnast Nadia Comaneci, former Oklahoma State football standout LeRoy “Ace” Gutowsky, Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self and OSU two-sport All-American John Henry Ward.

Comaneci is the wife of former Sooner national champion and Olympic gold medal gymnast Bart Conner, who operates Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman.

Self’s Oklahoma connection goes back to Edmond Memorial High School, where he was the state’s prep player of the year in 1981 before being a four-year letterman at Oklahoma State. Prior to Kansas, he spent coaching stops at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.
