Bears make strides at Top of the World scrimmage

NORMAN — Norman High wasn’t the only area team scrimmaging at Harve Collins Field on Friday. Also in attendance was Noble, which competed against both 5A and 6A squads, with mixed results.

The Bears showed improvement from the same time a year ago, achieving some success on offense even without starting quarterback Dakota Boxwell.

They also forced turnovers on defense, including an interception in one drive-to-score series against Shawnee.

But Noble did have some trouble stopping the passing game, with teams that spread the field finding some success against the Bears.

The Bears open the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tecumseh.

Backup steps up for Tigers: Another bright spot was backup quarterback Levi Fredrickson, who offered what could be a glimpse of the future at NHS.

The junior made the most of the snaps he took, reeling off several consecutive big plays that had his coaches nodding and his teammates mobbing him as he came off the field.

The first came on a simple option read, where Fredrickson kept the ball himself and dove down the middle, picking up 15 yards before eluding several defenders to punch the ball into the end zone.

He followed that up with a 30-yard touchdown pass after rolling out to his left side and having to throw across his body.

“I was really impressed with how all of the backups played tonight,” starting quarterback Jakcob Dean said. “They made a bunch of big plays.”

No major injuries sustained: Despite a few scary moments on Friday, including one where linebacker Cale Stumpff went down for several minutes, the Tigers got out of Friday’s four-hour scrimmage without any major injuries.

The other concern during the scrimmage was junior receiver Sayvon Foley, who hurt his toe early in the night. But by the time the Tigers took the field for the drive-to-score portion of the event, he was back on the field. Coach Greg Nation said that he expects everyone who is dinged up to be available when the Tigers open the season against Norman North on Thursday.
