Norman North’s Hogan excelling as top backfield option

NORMAN — Coming into the season, there was already a buzz surrounding Norman North’s Z’Quan Hogan. The sophomore had shown flashes of brilliance last season, and had done so well over the summer that he already had major colleges showing interest and an offer from Tulsa.

But what he hadn’t yet done is prove it on the field as the primary option in the backfield.

But, after two games, those questions have all been answered. Hogan has excelled, even in North’s pass-heavy offense. When he’s not running the ball, he’s taking short passes and eluding tacklers all the way down the field. Through two games, Hogan has more than 400 all-purpose yards and hasn’t made any major mistakes.

It’s a blockbuster debut for Hogan, and it’s proven that even in coach Wade Standley’s throw-first offense the feature back has room to shine.

He wasn’t the only one. Receiver Nick Basquine had a strong preseason showing but was virtually shut out in the opener against NHS. He bounced back in a big way against Del City, scoring two touchdowns including what would be the game-winner on a deep pass from quarterback David Cornwell.

“We just had guys step up there and make plays,” Standley said after watching Hogan put up 208 yards a touchdown against Del City. “We had a lot of adversity but we overcame a lot of things.”

Kicking game remains impressive: Norman High’s senior kicker Matt Hockett has to be considered one of the top kicking prospects in the state, and he demonstrated why again on Friday night.

Mired in a sluggish first half against Moore, the Tigers needed a lift, and Hockett helped to provide it. He was perfect on the night on his kickoffs, with every one going for a touchback, and he also pinned the Lions deep in their own territory several times.
