North cruises to easy victory vs. U.S. Grant

NORMAN — Three snaps; two touchdowns. That’s how long it took for Norman North to jump on U.S. Grant.

The Timberwolves struck early and often Thursday night, as North cruised to a 54-0 victory over U.S. Grant in quarterback John Kolar’s first career start.

Thursday’s contest against U.S. Grant may not have been as dangerous a game as next week’s against Edmond North, but there was no sign of a letdown from the T-Wolves. On the first play of the game, Kolar threw a perfect deep ball to Nick Basquine that would have gone for a touchdown if the wideout could have held on. North followed that up by handing the ball off to running back Quan Hogan, who took it 52 yards for a score.

A stop by the T-Wolves gave them the ball back in Generals territory, and Kolar found tight end Payton Prince for a 24-yard score that set the rout in motion.

After taking a 28-0 lead midway through the first quarter, coach Wade Standley pulled his starters, but it was enough time to get a look at North’s quarterback of the future as starter David Cornwell deals with an unspecified knee injury that kept him from even appearing on the sidelines of Thursday’s game.

The injury, which the Alabama commit suffered on a blocked punt against Yukon last week, kept Cornwell out of practice last week and may have him out far beyond Thursday’s game, though there has been no official word on the extent of the injury.

Kolar finished 5 of 8 on the night for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Hogan made his two carries count, going on touchdowns runs of 52 and then 74 yards.

If there was anything to take from Thursday’s game against the overmatched Generals, who suited up just 19 players, it was that Kolar looked comfortable in his new role as starter for the Timberwolves.
