Defending champion UConn crushes Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. — Moriah Jefferson scored a career-high 17 points and top-ranked Connecticut began the defense of its eighth national title with an 89-34 rout of in-state rival Hartford on Saturday.

The sophomore guard, who also had five assists, led a balanced offensive that saw four players reach double figures.

Center Stefanie Dolson had 16 points and six rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 14 points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis chipped in 12 for the Huskies.

Freshman Deanna Mayza led Hartford with eight points.

The competition gets much stiffer very quickly for UConn, which hosts No. 3 Stanford on Monday and has road games against No. 8 Maryland and No. 13 Penn State in the next eight days.

No. 3 Stanford 83, Boston College 71: Amber Orrange had 19 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, just missing a triple-double for Stanford in a season-opening win against Boston College.

Chiney Ogwumike led with 30 points and 14 rebounds and Bonnie Samuelson scored 15 for the Cardinal, who gave coach Tara VanDerveer her 895th career victory.

Kristen Doherty had 16 points and Shayra Brown scored 10 for the Eagles.

Stanford had a 28-0 run late in the first half and led 44-24 at the break. Boston College shot 52 percent in the second half, but could not recover from the deficit.

No. 5 Louisville 101, Loyola Chicago 54: Bria Smith scored 16 points and Louisville routed Loyola Chicago in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, spoiling the debut of Ramblers coach Sheryl Swoopes.

Sara Hammond, one of six Louisville players to score in double figures, had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener for both teams. Tia Gibbs, who missed last season with a hip injury, added 13 points.

Taylor Johnson scored 18 points for the Ramblers (0-1), who were playing their first game under the three-time WNBA MVP, who took over the program last Spring.

No. 6 Notre Dame 99, UNC WIlmington 50: Jewell Loyd and Michaela Mabrey scored 19 points each Saturday to lead Notre Dame to a victory over UNC Wilmington.
