Mustain not likely to become a Sooner

Former Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain is looking for a new place to play, but it doesn’t look like that place will be Oklahoma.

A Fort Smith, Ark., television station created a stir Wednesday night when it reported Mustain and his family would be in Norman Thursday for a visit.

Calls to OU coaches were not returned and the level of interest the Sooners have in the former Razorback is unknown. But several media outlets reported Thursday Mustain’s trip to Norman was canceled and a visit was made to Tulsa instead.

That move would appear to make more sense for the quarterback.

Former Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn left the Razorbacks for the same position with the Golden Hurricane earlier this week. Malzahn was also Mustain’s coach at Springdale (Ark.) High School.

Mustain was named the Parade, Gatorade and USA Today national offensive player of the year his senior prep season of 2005.

This past season, he started eight games as a true freshman. The Razorbacks went 8-0 in those games, but he was replaced by sophomore Casey Dick late in the season.

Mustain completed 69-of-132 passes for 894 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

OU, which is scheduled to begin spring practice March 5, has three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster. Junior Joey Halzle and redshirt freshman Sam Bradford will compete for the starting job with incoming freshman Keith Nichol.

Nichol graduated from Lowel (Mich.) High School a semester early and started classes Tuesday.
