No more asterisk for Longhorns By John Shinn The Norman Transcript Texas officials defused a controversy Monday with the decision to remove a display in its football facility that credited the program with a Big 12 Conference title ’ with an asterisk ’ from last season.
Oklahoma edged Texas for the south division crown last season, using the BCS standings as a tiebreaker. The Sooners then rolled through Missouri in the title game for a third straight conference crown and sixth in the last nine seasons. Last year’s division title was technically shared by the Sooners, Longhorns and Texas Tech. An uproar began after reporters spotted the display following Texas’ spring game Saturday. Texas assistant athletic director for media relations John Bianco told media outlets Texas coach Mack Brown wasn’t aware of the Big 12 title listing and will have it fixed. Monday, OU coach Bob Stoops said the controversy wasn’t a big deal to him. ’It doesn’t matter to me at all,’ he said. ’I know there isn’t one (an asterisk) on ours. I know where the trophy is.’
