Sooners lose again

Transcript Staff

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Oklahoma still figures to reach the Big 12 tournament at Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Ballpark. At least for the moment.

But the Sooners can’t keep going the way they’re going and expect to make it. Saturday, for the second straight game at Kansas, OU posted double-digit runs in a losing effort.

This time it was a 13-10 decision. Friday it was 15-13.

Those results make today’s 1 p.m. series finale as big a game as the Sooners have played all season.

At 6-13-1 in the conference, OU is holding down the eighth and final spot that will qualify for the postseason tournament. The Sooners are even in the loss column with sixth-place Baylor (10-13) and the seventh-place Jayhawks (7-13). They’re also even in the win column with ninth-place Kansas State (6-14) and last-place Texas Tech (6-15).

Saturday, OU had just evened things 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning when the bottom fell out in the last half of the frame.

The Jayhawks plated eight runs on seven hits before the Sooners returned to the plate. Seven of the runs, and nine in all, were charged to OU starter Jeremy Erben (1-2).

The Sooners came back with five more runs in the fifth inning, but still trailed the rest of the way.

Aljay Davis pushed his hitting streak to 13 games, going 5 for 6, yet only scored once. Aaron Baker went 2 for 5 with a home run and drove in three. J.T. Wise went 1 for 5, but it was a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Robby Price drove in three for KU. Nick Faunce, John Allman and Buck Afenir each drove in two.

The Sooners gave up all 13 runs without committing an error.

Jayhawk reliever Shaeffer Hall (4-2) picked up the win despite allowing two runs in three innings.

Both teams punched out 16 hits.
