If you’d told NASCAR fans that one team would have three cars in the top five of the series standings going into the second weekend in May, nobody would have been shocked.
With the all-star power of the Hendrick Motorsports quartet or the addition of Kyle Busch to make Joe Gibbs Racing better than ever, either of those teams would seem likely candidates.
But it’s neither. Richard Childress Racing instead finds itself in great position on the series, perhaps the best since Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s days ruling the track.
Jeff Burton is second, giving up the points lead to Busch after being on top much of the year. Clint Bowyer climbed to fourth after winning at Richmond Saturday and Kevin Harvick moved up a notch to fifth.
Between the trio, they have 18 top-10 finishes this season.
“I think it shows the consistency and teamwork we’re working with at RCR right now,” Childress said. “Everyone is trying to be the most competitive they can be and hopefully, have a run at The Chase and the championship.
“All three teams and all three drivers still have areas to improve on. We’re not resting on what we’ve accomplished at all but it is good knowing we have things headed in the right direction at this point in the season.”
The veteran Burton has shown the way much of the year.
While getting caught up in accidents the past two weeks at Talladega and Richmond, Burton managed finishes of 12th and 11th place, respectively, at those stops.
Bowyer had the big day last weekend with his victory in Richmond, hanging around to get the lead late.
“I thought we were a top-10 car, and then we became kind of a top-five car,” Bowyer said. “You know, the fastest car does not always win, and that was the case with (our car) at Richmond.
He has good memories from last year at Darlington, where he sat on the pole a year ago at the track, host of this weekend’s Dodge Challenger 500 (6 p.m. Saturday, FOX-25, Cox Channel 12.)
And with a team that is doing a lot around him, good days figure to keep coming.
