Something clicked for Oklahoma Sunday in the NCAA Norman Regional championship.
The Sooners, who had struggled advancing baserunners in Saturday’s 11-inning thriller against Arkansas, had no such problems against Oregon in an 11-0 run-rule that saw OU knock Duck pitchers around for 13 hits and 10 earned runs over six innings.
“This is a big, huge part of continuing to try and attain our goal, which is to get to the College World Series,” OU coach Patty Gasso said. “I thought this was a great weekend for us. Everyone stepped up the way they needed to and answered the call.”
Savannah Long went deep for the second straight day with a three-run home run in the first inning, and Susan Ogden added a grand slam in OU’s five-run sixth. It was the second time of the weekend the Sooners blanked the Ducks.
OU beat Oregon 6-0 Friday.
“That didn’t go the way we wanted to,” Oregon coach Kathy Arendsen said. “It was not what we planned or prepared for. I think the difference was Oklahoma’s pitching in the two times we played them, more than even their hitting, which was pretty impressive.”
D.J. Mathis struggled against the Lady Razorbacks Saturday afternoon, but she was almost perfect in the circle Sunday. She allowed one hit, walked one and struck out nine over five innings to pick up her 30th victory of the season.
She kept Oregon batters confused, allowing just two base-runners and taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
“She is feisty and gritty and spins the ball well,” Arendsen said. “I’m not sure what Arkansas saw that we didn’t. We just didn’t make the same adjustments. But she was very, very good.”
Long was OU’s top producer in the regional, going 6-for-13 with four runs scored, six RBIs and two home runs. She had the 11th-inning game-winner over Arkansas Saturday.
But personal achievements aren’t as important as victory to the senior from Midwest City.
“We won, so I’m happy,” Long said. “I’m excited to keep continuing on and winning and getting to the College World Series. I always try to do my best individually, but all I care about is the win.”
Both Long and Ogden finished with four RBIs Sunday. Lindsey Vandever drove in two and pinch-hitter Dani Dobbs, from Moore, drove in another when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, right before Ogden hit her grand slam into the left-field bleachers.
“Honestly, I was just looking for a pitch to drive,” Ogden said. “I had rolled over on one in my previous at-bat and I wasn’t going to let it happen again.”
The offensive explosion in regional play was a big change from last season, when the Sooner bats went quiet upon entering the NCAA Tournament.
