Charged with petty larceny after allegedly attempting to steal $34 worth of makeup from a Norman Wal-Mart, Oklahoma point guard Jenna Plumley was suspended indefinitely from the team by Sooner women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale Thursday.
By Thursday evening, Plumley’s name had already been omitted from the team’s roster at soonersports.com, the official site of OU athletics.
Following the arrest, the matter was “being handled internally,” said Jared Thompson, the university’s media relations contact for women’s basketbal. However, speaking Thursday via university release, Coale made Plumley’s issues quite a bit more public.
“There had been ongoing concerns with Jenna that culminated in a meeting within the last two weeks,” Coale said. “During that meeting a plan was outlined for what our program expected from her. She has not met those expectations.
“I am concerned for Jenna and want to proceed in a way that is in the best interest of her education and our team. This is an unfortunate situation, but I am hopeful that it will produce the best results in the long run.”
Prior to the suspension, Plumley figured to play a big role for the 2008-’09 Sooners for a third straight season.
She burst on the scene her freshman year, righting a Sooner ship that had wandered well off course despite five returning starters from a squad that had run the Big 12 table just a year earlier. Last season, Plumley started all 31 games and averaged 7.8 points, though her play was up and down throughout, often not to the standard she’d set as a freshman. Still, Courtney Paris was the only Sooner who exceeded Plumley’s 987 minutes on the court.
Plumley was also a part of the Sooners’ five-game European tour in May. But with Thursday’s suspension, her place on the coming season’s team has been placed in very serious doubt.
The Sooners open the regular season with a first-round game in the Preseason WNIT against Cal-Riverside Nov. 15 at Lloyd Noble Center.
