Broyles would rather play

Former Norman High standout Ryan Broyles had a solid scrimmage according to receivers coach Kevin Sumlin.

The 6-foot, 170-pound receiver caught one pass for 19 yards and made a juggling, one-handed grab on the east sideline, but was ruled out-of-bounds.

“He’s doing all right,” Sumlin said. “He’s a guy who likes to play football. He wasn’t much for any of the other stuff the first week of practice. So we got a little sideways because of drills and other stuff.

“But the interesting thing about it is you saw the same thing when he was in high school. When he got out in that scrimmage, he wasn’t fazed by anything.”

Back to work

Two returning starters returned to practice Monday after missing time to injury.

Safety Darien Williams practiced for the first time this preseason since suffering a stress fracture in his left foot. Offensive tackle Branndon Braxton also returned after missing last week due to an ankle injury.

Running back Allen Patrick is expected to miss at least another week with an ankle injury.

Doghouse

Redshirt freshman Gerald McCoy and walk-on junior Tommy Taggart started at defensive tackle in Saturday’s scrimmage. Defensive tackles coach Jackie Shipp said both played well, along with returning starter Cory Bennett.

He said those three have been solid throughout the first week of practice. But two tackles have already found their way into Shipp’s doghouse.

DeMarcus Granger and Steven Coleman, who both saw significant action last season, were demoted because they showed up to preseason camp out of shape.

“It’s all about playing hard,” Shipp said.
