Inexperienced, but good
Peters likes Tiger defense

Brandon Lewis started a couple of games at defensive end last year for Norman High when Michael Ford was battling eligibility issues. And that represents the extent of the starting experience for the Tigers’ 2007 defense.
Yet, NHS coach Butch Peters has few concerns about his unit. In fact, through the first week and a half of preseason workouts, Peters said the defense is what has impressed him the most.
“I think our defense, having to replace basically 11 starters, is pretty far along,” Peters said. “It’s a very talented group, they just need more experience.”
Experience will be gained tonight when the Tigers host Lawton for a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines were 8-4 last year and bring a speedy offense to Harve Collins Field.
“It will be a good challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it,” Peters said. “You just can’t simulate that kind of speed. They may have some big plays because of our inexperience.”
Quinn Johnson and Jordan Newby are the cornerbacks, Samson Adeoye will be the free safety and Zeke Zachary is the rover. Spencer Nees is the strongside linebacker, Zach Ladner is at the weakside and Trey Tashuda is in the middle.
Lewis is at one end, while Cameron Tabor, Brandon Dabney and Ryan Saunders are battling at the other end. Tabor will not scrimmage because of a throat infection.
Jack Jewell is at one tackle and Dustin Engles and Andrew Adams have been rotating at the other tackle.
As an interesting twist, the Wolverines’ starting quarterback used to start at NHS. Senior Cornelius Douglas, a run/pass threat, passed for 1,033 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 11 more scores last season. Division I colleges have offers ready for the 5-foot-9, 180-pound speedster.
When he was a sophomore, he started at cornerback for Peters.
“He’s a good player,” Peters said. “They moved to Lawton a week before two-a-days last year. He actually started at quarterback in a scrimmage against us when their No. 1 guy was hurt. That kid never got back on the field.”
Lawton running back Chris Porter rushed for 1,090 yards.
What the Tiger defenders lack in experience they try to make up for in aggressiveness.
“They just fly to the ball,” Peters said. “They did that at the intrasquad and they’ll do that (tonight). They’ve learned their responsibilities and after two weeks, they’re right where they need to be after the first scrimmage.”
