Williams has found a home at North
By Scott Moore
The Norman Transcript
Given the opportunity to talk about his home town, K. J. Williams had polite things to say. He had better things to say of his new home.
“I miss it just because it was home,” he said. “But it’s a lot different here. It’s a lot nicer.”
Williams grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His family moved to Oklahoma in 2005, shortly after Hurricane Katrina, but that wasn’t why they moved. His mother, Gerallynn, wanted to start a business here. He attended Community Christian school, then transferred to Norman North in 2006.
“People think of Louisiana, they think of Hurricane Katrina and crime,” Williams said. “And it is bad in that area. When I moved here to Norman, I’d never seen anything like it. It’s like the sky is brighter, the people are nicer and the air is cleaner. I’m glad I’m here.”
North is glad, too. Williams starts at tight end and defensive end.
Playing eight-man football at CCS, Williams started at quarterback, but that changed when he arrived at North.
“He just said, ‘That’s great. I’ll do whatever I need to,’” North coach Lance Manning said. “He’s a great athlete and a great kid.”
The switch paid off. He had 66 tackles with four sacks last year, but his future seems to be at tight end. Texas A&M noticed the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Williams and offered him a scholarship this past summer. He committed to the Aggies, spurning offers from Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and others.
He’s the first North player to receive a full scholarship to a Division I program.
“Just the vibe I got when I was there was pretty cool,” He said. “I won’t be the only one (to go Division I). There’s a lot of talent on this team.”
