After a volatile first few weeks, the best high school football teams in Oklahoma may be settling in at the top of the rankings.
For the first time this season, the No. 1 in all eight classes prevailed on the same weekend and there weren’t any changes at the top of The Associated Press’ poll.
Broken Arrow remains at the top of Class 6A, and the other No. 1 teams in the state once again are: Guthrie in Class 5A, Glenpool in 4A, Cascia Hall in 3A, Heritage Hall in 2A, Okeene in Class A, Davenport in Class B and Shattuck in Class C.
Elsewhere in this week’s poll:
Moving up: Mustang was one of the biggest movers, climbing three spots to No. 7 in Class 6A after its 27-26 overtime upset of then-No. 6 Edmond Santa Fe. The win was sealed when Santa Fe’s Robert Edge missed his second extra point of the game.
Going down: Velma-Alma, which had been ranked third in Class A, was the highest-rated team to lose in any class this week. Unranked Maysville pulled off the 26-6 upset to knock Velma-Alma all the way down to No. 8 in this week’s rankings.
Who’s hot? Star Spencer. After opening their season with a loss, the Bobcats have wins against ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks. They beat No. 10 Douglass 26-20 two weeks ago before downing No. 6 McLoud 39-35 last week to reclaim the No. 6 position they held in the preseason poll.
What’s next? Five of the state’s No. 1 teams will get tests this week against ranked foes. Broken Arrow goes against No. 6 Muskogee in Class 6A, Guthrie plays at No. 7 Ardmore in 5A, Cascia Hall visits No. 6 Berryhill in 3A, Heritage Hall hosts third-ranked Kingfisher in Class 2A and two of the top eight-man teams will also meet this week.
Shattuck, the five-time defending state champion in Class C, puts its 71-game winning streak on the line when it plays up one class against Laverne, the third-ranked team in Class B.
Other games between ranked teams include third-ranked Union at No. 10 Owasso in Class 6A and No. 6 Shawnee at fifth-ranked Carl Albert in 5A.
