Oklahoma wide receiver Manuel Johnson will likely miss Saturday’s game at Kansas State due to an injury to his right elbow. Sooner coach Bob Stoops said Johnson’s status for the game was “doubtful” on the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday morning.
“His elbow was dislocated, but it’s back (in place). There’s no other issues around it,” Stoops said. “There’s a chance by the end of the week that he’ll be comfortable enough to play. It’s questionable for this week, but likely after that.”
Johnson has 33 receptions for 574 yards this season. He leads OU with eight touchdown catches in the first seven games.
Senior Quentin Chaney stepped in for Johnson against Kansas and had six catches for 105 yards. He’ll likely get his first start of the season.
Holmes honored
Oklahoma safety Lendy Holmes was named the Big 12 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week Monday. The senior was selected for his efforts in the fourth-ranked Sooners’ 45-31 victory over Kansas.
Holmes had two interceptions, eight tackles and broke up two more passes in the victory. The three-year starter leads OU in interceptions with three this season and is fourth on the team in tackles with 42.
“I was able to make some plays when it counted,” Holmes said Monday. “I finally got my hands on some balls.”
Nebraska at night
The Nov. 1 Oklahoma-Nebraska game will kickoff at 7 p.m. at Owen Field. What network will televise the contest is the only question that remains.
The game will be aired on either ABC or ESPN, but that decision won’t be made until the results of this week’s games are known. Nebraska hosts Baylor Saturday.
Regardless of which network is selected, the game will be a national telecast.
This will mark the third time in the last four meetings that Oklahoma and Nebraska have played at night. The 2004 game in Norman and the 2006 Big 12 championship game in Kansas City, Mo., were both played under the lights.
