DEL CITY — Talk about an early season showcase. The Del City girls entered ranked No. 2 (by coachesaid.com) and the Norman High girls entered No. 4.

And the Eagles lived up to their billing.

Despite a monster game in the post from NHS’ Lacy Ramon, one that included 21 points, 13 rebounds and a defensive effort that held Desiree Jeffries, Del City’s best player, to just seven points, it was still the Eagles over the Tigers 60-52.

“We knew they had other weapons,” NHS coach Matilda Mossman said.

Bobbie Marshall netted 13, Tiffany Goldwire added 12 and Toni Young finished with 11. That was enough to counter the Tigers’ one-two punch of Ramon and Ashley Bruner.

Bruner finished with 20 points and eight rebounds.

“It was at their place and they made more shots than we did,” Mossman said.

Especially at the free-throw line, where Del City canned 16 of 21 against NHS’ horrid 6 of 18.

The Tigers will be back against quality competition by Thursday, when they open tournament play in Ft. Smith, Ark., against Columbia (Mo.) Hickman at 4 p.m.

Same old story for NHS boys

DEL CITY — At some point it has to stop. However, that point was not Tuesday night for the Norman High boys, who once again fell behind early, only to fight back, only to lose in the end.

Del City held off the Tigers 58-52, dropping NHS to 0-3 on the season. Each of the Tigers’ losses has followed the same pattern.

“Right now we’re our own worst enemy,” NHS coach Wes Clark said.
