Madu will miss opener

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said senior running back Mossis Madu will be suspended for the Sept. 4 season opener against Utah State.

Madu has been practicing with the team throughout the preseason, but the one-game suspension is the result of a DUI he received in July

Aug. 3, Madu pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Madu received a $430 fine and was placed on one-year probation. His sentence was deferred.

Madu is listed as the Sooners’ No. 2 running back behind DeMarco Murray on the latest depth chart. The former Norman High standout has rushed for 724 yards and scored eight touchdowns over the last three seasons.

Madu was used primarily as receiver last season. He caught seven passes in 12 games and saw action mostly on special teams.

Stoops would not elaborate when asked if any other players would have to serve suspensions for the season opener.

“Whether they are or not, I don’t publicize that,” Stoops said. “In fact, I shouldn’t have publicized his. I should have just let you guys count numbers at the opening game and let you figure it out who is there and who isn’t.”

Welcome relief

The high temperature in Norman Tuesday was an unseasonably pleasant 85 degrees with a brisk north wind.

The temperature drop was welcome relief to players who’ve experienced nothing but afternoons in the high 90s or triple digits since practice began Aug. 5.

“The air conditioner came on today. It’s about a 25 degree swing,” Stoops said. “It was great. Players loved it and it worked out well.”

Depth at RB

With Madu out for the opener, the depth chart at running back will get adjusted. Counting Murray and Madu, OU has been working with six at the spot. Sophomores Jermie Calhoun and Jonathan Miller and freshmen Roy Finch and Brennan Clay have also been working there.

But offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Monday that Finch has been hampered by an ankle injury and has missed some critical practice time.

“I hope he’s drinking milk,” the coach cracked. “I told him to rub some dirt on it.”

Captains chosen

Senior defensive end Jeremy Beal, junior linebacker Travis Lewis and sophomore quarterback Landry Jones were selected team captains by a vote of the players.

“They were by far and away the top vote getters,” Stoops said.
