Lions heat up the perimeter to blow by Tigers on senior night

NORMAN — The Lions started hot. They hit their first six 3-pointers and built an early lead.

And they stayed that way, hitting nine shots from beyond the arc in the 86-51 victory. It was a dominating effort by the Lions, who led 27-7 after one quarter and 39-22 at halftime. Jaylon Wilson led Moore with 17 points while Eric Blankenship added 16 points.

John Michael Benardello led NHS with 17, while Cooper Clark and Michael Kish both had 10.

For most teams, Friday marked the end of the regular season. The Tigers will play one more game before the playoffs begin, hosting Del City at 6 p.m. Monday.

Norman North 74, Del City 57: Three days after dropping a close contest to Midwest City, No. 9 Norman North responded with a resounding victory over Del City.

A week ahead of the regional playoffs, the Timberwolves took advantage of their final chance to perfect things in a 74-57 victory over Class 5A’s eighth-ranked Del City. It was the ninth win in 10 games for the T-Wolves, who moved to 17-6 with the victory.

Coach Bryan Merritt started his five seniors — Kairo Rutledge, Payton Prince, Ronnie Thompson, Tre’Vez Stevenson, and Malcolm Carter — and was able to stick with them through much of the first half despite it being an unconventional lineup.

“I was going to make substitutions if Del City took the lead, but our guys kept it all through the first quarter,” Merritt said. “They did a great job tonight.”

The T-Wolves will travel to Mustang, where they’ll meet Westmoore (8-10) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the opening round of the playoffs.

Norman North girls 69, Del City 56: Norman North played in front of a Senior Night crowd on Friday, and the Timberwolves didn’t disappoint. The seventh-ranked girls pulled away in the second half to defeat Del City, 69-56.
