Sooners off to good start in Arizona

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Corey Copping tossed six shutout innings and catcher Mac James and second baseman Hector Lorenzana both went 2 for 4 and drove in a run in Oklahoma’s 9-0 victory Thursday over Manhattan.

The game was the first of four the Sooners (6-3) will play at the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals spring training facility in Surprise, Ariz. They face Santa Clara at 5 p.m. today.

OU hopes its play from Thursday carries over. It didn’t commit an error for only the second time in nine games, and put the game away with a four-run first inning.

“We’re always trying to play clean baseball. I thought we did that today,” OU coach Pete Hughes said. “I thought Copping set the tone and threw a ton of strikes. We did a real good job in situational hitting and got our share of two-out hits.”

Copping (2-0) scattered five hits, struck out four and only issued one walk.

Manhattan (1-4) committed three errors in the first inning and were held to six hits on the day. Matt Simonetti took the loss for the Jaspers. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits over three innings.

Third baseman Sheldon Neuse went 2 for 5 with an RBI as part of the Sooners’ nine-hit afternoon.
