Sooners smash records in doubleheader

NORMAN — After three weeks of looking for consistency, the Sooners found it in their home opener on Friday. The offense, which began to find its footing last weekend, certainly has it now after a record-setting day at home.

The Sooners (12-5) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-8) in both games of a double header, with scores of 10-0 and a record-breaking 35-1 in the second contest.

Several school records fell on Friday. The 35 runs were the most in program history, easily besting the old record of 24. It was the seventh-most in NCAA history and most since 2004. The 24 hits tied a school record, and Shelby Pendley set the school record with 10 RBIs, coming on two doubles and two home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Lauren Chamberlain tied a school record with five runs scored, while Javen Henson added a career-high six RBIs.

It wasn’t just school records that were broken. Chamberlain blasted the 62nd home run of her career, breaking a tie she held with former teammate Jessica Shults for most in Big 12 history.

The Sooners were looking forward to playing their first home game of the season, and they didn’t disappoint their fans, most of whom were watching OU for the first time since seeing the Sooners win the national title in Oklahoma City eight months ago.

No. 13 OU returns to Marita Hynes Field for a doubleheader against No. 15 Nebraska today, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
