Number of Norman athletes ready to put their signature on the line

NORMAN — National Signing Day has arrived, and both Norman High and Norman North have a number of athletes who will continue their careers at the next level.

North will host its signing day ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. in the gym, and will recognize Bri Kuestersteffen and Ben Barrett for winning national honors this year. NHS will begin activities at 8:30 a.m. as well.

More than 20 athletes from both schools are expected to continue their career at the next level. Heading that list is a number of athletes who will play at the highest level next season. Five Timberwolves and six Tigers have signed or are expected to sign letters of intent today, while several others are expected to walk on to major programs.

One of those is David Cornwell, who quarterbacked for the Timberwolves last season before tearing his ACL and graduated in December. Cornwell is already enrolled at Alabama. Joining him at the Football Bowl Subdivision level are Payton Prince, who has committed to Tulsa, and Norman High kicker Matt Hockett, who is expected to sign with Oklahoma State. Additionally, North’s Nick Basquine and NHS’ Cade Parker have been invited to walk on at Oklahoma.

They aren’t the only athletes who will stay in town. A pair of North runners, Abbey Mace and Belle Wallace, plan to join NHS’ Haley Redwine in signing with the Sooners, as well as soccer player Kali Newman.

Bri Kuestersteffen, a two-sport star at North, is expected to play soccer at Alabama-Birmingham next season, while Timberwolves pitcher Brad Kinsey plans to move on to Wichita State and soccer player Victoria VanHootegem plans to attend Florida Atlantic.

Those are just some of Norman’s athletes who will sign letters of intent today. In all, nearly every sport will be represented at the ceremonies and about two dozen athletes will take the first step to the rest of their playing careers today.
