Norman returns today to hardwood

NORMAN — The snow may have canceled school and all activities on Friday, but the Tigers and Timberwolves will be back at it today.

Friday’s games will be played today instead, with Norman North hosting Southmoore at 3 p.m. and Norman High traveling to Edmond Memorial for a 1:30 p.m. tip. Only varsity games will be played.

It’s important that the teams get the games in as quickly as possible, because regional seedings will be finalized next week. Preliminary seedings last week had all four Norman schools going on the road, but the Timberwolves in particular are just a few spots away from hosting a regional for the second straight year.

“That’s what we’re aiming for, to host,” girls coach Jeff Blough said. “We hosted last year, and that was important to us.”

It’s also a game especially important for the NHS girls, who have secured several upsets in the past two weeks but have yet to crack the top 20. A win over No. 14 Edmond Memorial would bolster the Tigers’ seeding when regional pairings are announced.

Rankings update: Both Norman North teams are ranked No. 10 in the latest edition of the top 20 after encouraging weeks.

For the boys, it was several impressive wins that, while coming over lesser competition, show how far the young T-Wolves have come this season. For the girls, the return of starters Bri Kuestersteffen and Sam Landreth and the news that super sub Julian Mougell may not be done for the season was cause for celebration.

On the girls’ side, Southmoore is ranked No. 16 while Westmoore is No. 18. In Class 3A, Washington remains undefeated at 17-0 and is ranked No. 4 behind Adair, Alva and Verdigris, all of which have one loss.

On the boys’ side, Moore is ranked No. 16 and Southmoore is 17th. Washington is ranked No. 20 in Class 3A.
